After a 6 year research study in a state aided Primary school in Hong Kong where Cantonese is the medium of instruction, I discovered published supplementary materials to complement the one size fits all coursebook.  Concerned that I was not meeting my learners needs because of the variables in their experiential backgrounds and abilities, I explored using a multi-leveled published reading scheme. This not only enabled me to track progress for individuals, classes and yeargroups but I was able to predict future needs based on previous results. The ‘published’ materials themselves are the ‘vehicle’ and alone do not teach English, but the materials I developed scaffolded the learning of the reading strategies. Thus learners learnt to read, leading them to autonomy and reading to learn! This was done at individual pace and ability whilst the teachers role altered from main human resource, fount of all knowledge to facilitator. You will leave this presentation with some ideas on how to quickly assess if texts are the ‘right’ level for your learners and some strategies for making text more understandable.
